Been looking into the wow private server listings and there seems to be a ton out there now!
So I thought why not create one of my own?
Would anyone be interested in GM'ing if I set one up for the public?
I could use any/all kinds of help with this. From hardware, server admins, web site creation, you name it.
So if any of you WOW people are down then respond here.

BTW for all of you that have wanted to play, but have not for some reason in the past, you can now play the game for free! Thats right you don't even need to buy the game to play on a free server!
Just download the trial version of WOW, and the Burning Crusade, then patch the game, then edit one file and create an account on the server of your choice, and you're playing to your hearts content!
To Oni: You're in as a GM!
As a matter of fact I see no reason why everyone who wants one can't have a GM account on the server I am hoping to create.
But as of right now I still need to hammer out the details of the hardware and connections...

Dave,
what type of connection speeds do you need? I've sold my house and i will be moving into an appartment middle of December but will be bringing my Business class RR with me. Its a 10mb down 5 up i think. I can host the server, i even have a pen 4 box laying around i could turn into a game server it just needs some ram its a bit light (512mb)
Also with my current hosting plan i can host a domain for free with FTP access.
Oh and if anyone wants to help me move your are more than welcome to....

Hey that sounds like a great connection for the server Toee, beats my insightbb connection speeds. What are the specs of your server? What kind of memory do you need? If it's DDR2 LMK how many slots there are 'cause it's dirt cheap right now... The server will need to be able to handle mysql, probably a web page so peeps can create accounts and see the server status, and then the actual WOW server software. I'm a newb to SQL and web design so this will all be a learning experience for me.  |

its a dual pen 1.4ghz I need 133 ECC registered ram the box has 1.5gb now.
If I can't find ram I have a different box 2.4ghz HT with 1gb

Well after further research it has come to light that the server emulator software is based on a beta version of the game ( search mangos wow server for latest). Further work on fixing bugs, issues with the characters, classes and other messed up junk in the beta is really up to the admins of the server. I've been playing on a fledgling server for a few weeks now and it is buggy! Plus the damn thing goes down quite a bit to boot.
So until a complete version of the software is released, and some of the bugs worked out I'm gonna pass on this project and try a more advanced free server out there - there's 100's to choose from!
Also, there seems to be some dispute over the legality of this as well. Obviously Blizzard and their parent companies would like you to buy their software, but they really make their money on the server charges. As of this moment I do not believe blizzard has gone after any private servers out there, however any server I am associated with would not be open to the public beyond friends and family(of friends).

Well guys I finally made one of these to play around on and am looking for a few people who want to be GM's or just play on a free server. If you guys are interested send me a pm with your email and I'll create you an account and tell you what needs to be done to connect to it.
the server is only at 2.3.3 ATM, but I will be bumping it up to 2.4.1 or 2.4.2 soon. So to connect you will need to create a seperate install of wow, patch it up to 2.3.3 only! and do not connect it to the blizzard server. The next thing to do is download a simple, free VPN software called hamachi and install it. Once this is done, and I have created an account for you, you can log in and start having fun!
