salvage your old hard drives, and your case...
Go for decent low latency DDR2, a core 2 duo motherboard w/ PCIe, a 7900GT (take it from a guy with SLI, SLI isnt worth it), and drop as much as possible on the Intel Core 2 Duo processor... I think the e6600 or whatever is the best performer... my hardware knowledge has been slacking as of late... but Intel is currently the way to go...

Well obviously you haven't been paying attention lately, because everyone else knows, "Winchip" is currently the way to go when it comes to high performance processors.

Core2Duo E6300s are like 180ish now 2 GB Good DDR2 ~250 Motherboard will depend on if you want to OC or not, so between 150 and 250 8800GTS ~300 (or X1950XT to save $100) Excess can be spent on a new case, hard drives, or whatever else you need. Alternately, get a (used) 7900GT and a cheap(er) motherboard and try to swing a Dell 2007FPW monitor. Edit: I don't know what all you have now, but you could just skip the C2D upgrade an go straight for an 8800GTS and Dell 2407FPW. That's what I'm going to do, Photoshop/Illustrator is so much better to use with a giant ass monitor (since your a graphic designer and all ).

I'm starting from scratch, minus the DVD drives and HDD's. As far as Video cards go, I'm thinking of going with the 8800GTS, it seems like a really good deal right now + I've had bad luck lately with ATI. Thanks ORenj9 and BLiTz for the heads up.
