With so many new games due out within the next six months, its tough to give a clear cut direction of which game will be the end all be all of fun, entertainment, or competitive gaming. Lets take a look at the four of the big name FPS games due out during Q4 of 2011 and Q1 of 2012:
Battlefield 3: Probably the best looking game graphics wise, and still following the approach to current day warfare action, BF3 seems to be adjusting back to the play style of the BF2 days. With the reintroduction of Jets, and movement options such as the prone position, BF3 has the makings of being everything that BF2 was and then some. The only drawbacks that may appear would be the system resources required for a PC game to handle 64 players on a large map (console had to be cut to 32, sorry chums).
CS: Global Offensive: Valve recently released news about a new rendition and revival to the CS franchise. The only question is... What else can be done? CS was brought to immortality due to its simple objective based gaming that is still at the forefront of gaming today. CS:Source was originally met with clashing due to original CS gamers not liking the new physics aspects of the game. The question will be, will CS:GO be met with the same skepticism as other renditions of CS? The following of CS alone will be enough to allow CS:GO to have a crack at the competitive gaming crown.
CoD MW3: The king of console FPS games is going head to head with BF3 as both are due to be released within two weeks of each other. The question banging around in my mind is simply, what does the new rendition of CoD offer? MW3 is being released within one year of CoD: Black Ops, yet many are excited for the next installment. My guess would be that CoD will continue to claim the console crown, yet will leave the PC crowd unamuzed.
Tribes: Ascend: Almost 12 years after the original, Tribes is making a comeback. But how does it plan to compete? By being free to play. T:A is offering a limited class selection on their F2P version, but also has the full rendition available for resale. T:A is looking to fall back on the roots of FPS gaming with high speed movement, futuristic weapons, and tossing in some jetpacks to make things interesting. With what promises to be faster-paced gaming than most of your modern shooters, it might have more than a few tricks up its sleeve for some old fashioned run-and-gun fun...
Time will tell where the FPS world is heading. But you can definitely expect many members of SOGA to play most, if not all of the new shooters that are due out. Expect many hours of fragging, laughter, and retardation at the expense of random n00bs across one of our servers. And definitely expect to see a server or two from these four games up and running in the near future.
